Artist Profile

Pablo
Siebel

Born in Santiago de Chile.

He is not an easy artist to classify in any particular art style, although his art is clearly from our time. From his beginnings he never felt obliged to adhere to any artistic doctrine or tendency. He is a contemporary soul, observer of the world, mankind and its relationships. This also corresponds to his exhaustive study of world religions. His many interests, I would say, have come about from living in different parts of the globe.

He was born December 1954 in Santiago de Chile. In 1970 Siebel moved with his family to Europe. Following a sojourn in his father’s native Germany, in 1971 they finally settled in Spain. After finishing in the German School in Madrid (1973) he moved to Hamburg, Germany, to obtain the Diploma in Commercial Banking (1975) and to begin his art studies.Back in Spain, Siebel concurrently studied law and art. While he obtained his law degree(1979) from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, he never practiced his father’s chosen profession. Instead, he opted to follow his personal art.

The new works are different to previous years; the scary or afflicted figures seldom appear and the explicit references to religious themes is reduced, though still present, expressed sometimes in a title, or as a candle, some details.

The luminous acrylic paintings follow only in aspect the traditional art forms, they are wall hangings which continue the line of work of the tridimensional objects.

He normally works with these known elements: spirals, parallel lines, layrinths. In this way he makes the space in the picture denser, he follows the artistic tradition of representation using old symbols, but in a very personal way reflecting his own ideas. This is essential to Pablo Siebel, he knows the history of art and uses its signs. At the same time he is aware of his surroundings integrating actual art novelties.

His work transmits a feeling of happiness in the creative process, an irony, keeping a certain distance between himself and his work.

His sculptures: We see all kind of materials in his work, a piece of plastic tube, thin branches from a bush, cloth, etc. He recycles these used, discarded materials.

Rescued from the rubbish, he gives them meaning and converts them into art, always with a touch of irony, creative happiness, in what we may call a ludic way.

The spectator, like the artist, must first look at the whole composition, then discern among the various materials being used and then enjoy, with tranquility, the diverse fun and colorful attachments. At a second glance, it could be that we discover new things or other explanations. The artist does not oppose this.
